Keynote speaker Matthew Walker, PhD is a sleep scientist and researcher on the cutting-edge of findings related to sleep and how sleep directly relates to human health and disease, including the COVID-19 virus. The pandemic virus has been so disruptive, bringing new stressors, anxiety, and even sleepless nights to many. Now, more than ever, the immune-boosting, stress-reducing effects of quality sleep are critical to keep us healthy and resilient and no one knows this better than sleep expert Dr. Walker. His New York Times best-selling book, Why We Sleep, provides a complete description of, and prescription for, sleep, and his Ted Talk was one of the five highest viewed in 2019. With charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs, and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice, Why We Sleep explains how we can harness sleep to prevent illness including cancer, Alzheimer’s, obesity and diabetes. It also describes how sleep can slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; improve learning, mood, and energy levels; regulate hormones, enhance the education and lifespan of our children; and boost the efficiency, success, and productivity of our businesses. The book concludes with a provocative new vision for sleep in the modern world – one that aims to solve the greatest public-health challenge we now face: the global sleep-loss epidemic.  Dr. Walker is a Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology, and founder and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley.
